I wish I had a chance to read Mamta Goyal’s book when I first took the plunge into directly managing other people. And a plunge it was - I’ve spent years running away from having direct reports. I had great explanations for why I wanted to remain an individual contributor. I mostly believed them myself. Mostly. The truth is that I was afraid. When it did happen to me, I was reactive. I knew what kind of leader I didn’t want to be, but in the absence of guidance, I floundered for years at the expense of my career, but also at the expense of people now relying on me. In hindsight, it’s crystal clear to me that I could have done better, I could have learned quicker with the right guidance. I’ve been lucky enough to work with Mamta in the last company I founded, and I got to witness (and benefit from) her management skills in action. Over many years, I saw her management style help her teams not only perform, but grow and thrive. I know that she speaks from experience and I wish she had written this book earlier. It would have saved me and those around me a good number of scrapes and bruises. Whether you’re a brand new people leader or a veteran looking to better themselves, I highly recommend you read (and then re-read) this book.
This book is a reflection of Mamta's leadership style. She is by far the best manager I ever had. The strategies described in the book work. I am living proof of standing out in the crowd with her guidance. Our team worked hard, had fun, and made a huge impact on the organization.
