Reflections on Loss, Love, and Leadership

How Mentorship Shapes Us 🌊

Grief has a way of pausing time, doesn’t it? The world continues to spin, yet for those who have experienced recent loss—especially the loss of treasured friends or family—it can feel as though we’re moving in slow motion. This year, I lost two of my closest friends to cancer. Each battle was unique, but the heartbreak of saying goodbye was profound both times. They started as colleagues, evolved into mentors, and eventually became my dearest friends.

When we lose someone important, we often realize just how deeply they influenced our lives. It’s also a moment to reflect on the enduring power of mentorship: the simple conversations that hold life-changing wisdom, or the steady guidance that quietly shapes who we become. In the days following my friends’ passing, I revisited the lessons they taught me—insights that continue to guide my path of growth, healing, and leadership.

A quiet walk by the sea, reflecting on love, loss, and new beginnings.

1. We Always Have a Choice

One of my mentors believed firmly in the idea that “we always have a choice.” It sounds straightforward, but it’s a profoundly empowering mindset. She taught me that no matter the situation, we can decide how we respond—be it in our personal lives or professional spheres. Even as she neared the end of her life, she chose where and how she wanted to spend her final days: surrounded by loved ones, in a place full of comfort and memories.

Leadership Lens: We can slip into believing that circumstances dictate our actions. However, remembering we have a choice is liberating. While we can’t always control outcomes—like a market slump or unforeseen challenges—we can control how we deal with them: communicating with empathy, setting realistic goals, and pivoting strategy when necessary. Every decision we make reveals our character and influences those around us.

2. Love Matters Most

We often hold back the words “I love you” for special occasions or specific people. Losing my friends underscored how fleeting life can be—and how vital it is to express love openly. A simple hug, a handwritten note, or a heartfelt text can mean the world to someone who needs to feel seen and valued.

Leadership Lens: Love might seem like an odd concept to bring into a corporate environment, but genuine care forms the backbone of strong leadership. When you authentically care about your team—checking in, recognizing their work, celebrating small victories—you build an environment of trust. Teams that feel genuinely supported tend to be more motivated, resilient, and creative.

3. Hope Endures

Cancer casts a long shadow, yet my friends remained steadfast in their hope—hope for effective treatments, for better days, or simply for more meaningful moments. Their unwavering optimism left a lasting impression on everyone around them.

Leadership Lens: Hope is not about denying reality; it’s about believing in the possibility of breakthroughs. The best leaders leverage hope to inspire, reminding their teams that every setback is part of a journey, and that staying committed to a vision can ultimately lead to success.

4. Joy in the Little Moments

A pivotal lesson my friends embodied was finding joy in the most ordinary places. Joy isn’t limited to promotions or once-in-a-lifetime events—it’s in everyday experiences: the aroma of morning coffee, the laughter of children, or a quick call with a loved one.

Leadership Lens: In leadership roles, it’s easy to overlook the small wins when we’re chasing bigger metrics or deadlines. Pausing to appreciate minor achievements fosters a culture of recognition and gratitude. Encouraging your team to celebrate incremental progress can fuel a positive atmosphere and keep morale high.

5. The Power of Optimism

I watched my mentors face challenges that might have overwhelmed others. Yet, they remained optimistic. This wasn’t blind positivity; it was a belief that problems can be solved. Their spirit was contagious, inspiring those around them to keep going even under uncertainty.

Leadership Lens: Optimism in leadership shifts the question from “Can we?” to “How might we?” That reframe can open doors to solutions previously hidden by doubt. When you show optimism in the face of obstacles, you empower your team to approach problems with determination rather than fear.

6. Growth Is a Lifelong Journey

Even while battling terminal illness, my friends continued to learn—from scientific research, spiritual teachings, or conversations with strangers. Their curiosity never waned, and they instilled in me the conviction that growth is a lifelong pursuit.

Leadership Lens: The rapid pace of today’s world demands that leaders remain students at heart. Continual learning helps you adapt to new challenges and technologies. By embracing webinars, reading widely, or seeking insight from peers who excel in areas you want to improve, you lead by example and encourage your team to do the same.

7. Seek Guidance from Those Who’ve Gone Before

We often learn best from those who have traveled the path ahead of us. True mentors share both their triumphs and mistakes, guiding us to adapt, persevere, and remain open to change.

Leadership Lens: Effective leaders draw on mentors and industry veterans, whether by reading thought leadership materials, joining professional groups, or forming relationships with experts. Surrounding yourself with seasoned mentors accelerates your personal development—and that growth benefits everyone around you.

Mentorship: The Torch That Lights Our Way

All these insights underscore the quiet but transformative power of mentorship. My mentors were more than just role models; they were active participants in my evolution. They challenged me, believed in me during moments of doubt, and modeled how to face adversity with grace.

Their passing is a poignant reminder that while mentorship may not last forever, its influence does. Each of us has the capacity to be a mentor or to find one. By doing so, we create a ripple effect of shared knowledge that can transform families, workplaces, and communities.

Looking Ahead: Planting Seeds for 2025

As we near the end of the year, many of us are reflecting on our lives and careers, formulating visions for 2025. Often, these goals focus on tangible achievements—hitting revenue targets, reaching health milestones, or expanding business. Yet, true transformation often begins internally: with our mindset, our approach to challenges, and the way we uplift others.

  1. Reflect on Your Leadership Style

    • Ask yourself: How have I shown up for my team, friends, or family this year?

    • Identify areas for growth. Which habits or perspectives need refining?

  2. Identify One Key Growth Area

    • Whether it’s communication, decision-making, or emotional intelligence, choose a single focus.

    • Working on one area at a time can create powerful, lasting change.

  3. Find or Become a Mentor

    • Mentorship is not just about corporate advancement; it’s also about sharing life experiences.

    • Reach out to someone who inspires you. Ask for their guidance or insight.

    • Alternatively, share your own experiences with someone who could benefit from your expertise.

The Lasting Legacy

Grief is a testament to love: We grieve deeply because we have loved deeply. Losing my friends reminded me how we carry the spirit of our mentors into every decision, every act of kindness, every moment of self-improvement. Their wisdom lives on in the choices we make and the people we become.

Let these reflections serve as a gentle reminder of what truly matters—compassion, courage, and continuous growth. By keeping our hearts open to new possibilities and sharing knowledge with those around us, we honor the people who have guided our journeys.

We may not always have control over life’s biggest challenges, but we do have control over how we respond: choosing kindness over judgment, optimism over cynicism, and curiosity over complacency. Let’s continue to learn, to love, and to lead—together.

Merry Christmas.
